At-Home Stroke Rehab Is Near

Researchers at the University of Houston have developed a low-cost, portable brain-computer interface (BCI) that links stroke patients’ brains to powered exoskeletons for rehabilitation. The wireless and user-friendly BCI utilizes a dry-electrode headset for scalp electroencephalography (EEG) recordings, allowing it to interpret brain activity and initiate robotic movements. This approach can potentially enhance motor recovery after strokes. The adjustable headset, made from off-the-shelf components, accommodates a wide range of users and includes both BCI algorithms and a self-positioning dry electrode bracket. This innovation offers a solution to the limitations of current expensive and immobile EEG-based BCI systems, making it more accessible for clinical and non-clinical applications.
